Nel Ust Wyclef Jean was born in Croix-des-Bouquets (Haiti) in 1969 and is a rapper, multi instrumentalist (guitar, piano, drums, keyboards, sampler, and synthesizer), actor, and author. Over the years, his musical style has spanned many genres such as hip hop, reggae fusion (a mix of reggae with other genres, such as pop, R&B, jazz, and drum and bass), R&B, soul, and neo soul (a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B but is distinguished by a less conventional sound and the presence of many other genres ranging from jazz, funk, and hip hop to pop, fusion, and African music). He’s had a stellar career with 8 studio albums, 1 compilation albums, 1 extended play, 25 singles, 1 mix tape, and he's collaborated with The Bee Gees, Pras, John Forté, Bono, Tom Jones, Lauryn Hill and many other renowned artists. He's received many accolades including 3 Grammy Awards (for Best Rap Album, Album of the Year, and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal) and a MTV Video Music Award (for Best R&B Video). He's also written a memoir titled Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story.
