The band was formed in Old Bridge Township (New Jersey) in 1980 after the breakup of punk band The Lubricunts. Former Lubricunts drummer Rat Skates (birth name Lee Kundrat) and bassist D. D. Verni (birth name Carlo Verni) recruited guitarist Robert Pisarek and singer Bobby Ellsworth to form Overkill. The band’s been through many line up changes since then and it currently consists of Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (lead vocals), D.D. Verni (bass, backing vocals), Dave Linsk (lead guitar, backing vocals), Derek "The Skull" Tailer (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), and Ron Lipnicki (drums). Their musical style falls under the category of thrash metal (an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its fast tempo and overall aggression) and they cite Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Venom as their main influences. Their playing style also includes elements of punk, hard rock, NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), and they’re widely regarded as one of the most important thrash bands from the East Coast. They’ve has a stellar career with 17 studio albums, 3 live albums, 5 compilation albums, 2 video albums, and 12 music videos.
