Gwar was formed in 1984 in Richmond by Ben Eubanks (vocals), Dave Brockie (guitar), Steve Douglas (guitar), Chris Bopst (bass guitar), Jim Thomson (drums), and Hunter Jackson. The band’s been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Michael Bishop aka Blothar (vocals and bass), Mike Derks aka Balsac the Jaws of Death (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), Brad Roberts aka Jizmak Da Gusha (drums and percussion), Jamison Land aka Beefcake the Mighty (bass and backing vocals), Brent Purgason aka Pustulus Maximus(lead guitar and backing vocals), Bob Gorman aka Bonesnapper (backing vocals), Matt Maguire aka Sawborg Destructo (backing vocals), and Don Drakulich aka Sleazy P. Martini (backing vocals). Their musical style spans many genres such as heavy metal, hardcore punk, thrash metal crossover thrash, funk metal, shock rock, alternative metal, and even comedy rock. They’ve had a stellar career with 13 studio albums, 2 live albums, 2 compilation albums, 17 video albums, 1 extended play, 23 singles, and they’ve sold over 820,000 records in the US. They’ve received many accolades including two Grammy Awards nominations for Best Metal Performance and Best Long Form Music Video.
